About Kansas City Drum Academy

Kansas City Drum Academy was founded to give young musicians in Kansas City a professional, structured, and inspiring environment to develop their craft. Located inside the legendary Mutual Musicians Foundation on 18th & Vine — a National Historic Landmark and the birthplace of Kansas City jazz — our students don't just learn to play. They learn to perform, to lead, and to carry on a tradition of musical excellence that has defined this city for over a century.

We offer drumline training and private drum set instruction for students ages 8 and up. Whether your child is a complete beginner or already has experience, Kansas City Drum Academy meets them where they are and takes them further than they imagined.

Meet Your Instructor — Tyree Johnson

Tyree Johnson, known throughout Kansas City as "Tyree the Drummer," is a professional drummer, a pillar of the KC drumline community for 20+ years with decades of experience in performing with live bands and teaching across the city.

In 2022, Tyree was selected to be featured in a documentary presented by Jazz at Lincoln Center — "Where Jazz Lives: The Kansas City Edition" — a distinction that reflects both his artistry and his deep roots in Kansas City's music community. He is 3x Guitar Drum Off District Winner and has also led his previous drumlines to win drum competitions and parades.

As the founder of Kansas City Drum Academy, Tyree brings professional-level instruction, real-world performance experience, and a genuine passion for developing the next generation of Kansas City musicians.

His students don't just learn drums. They learn discipline, confidence, and what it means to be a musician.
